As one of the first GFSI-benchmarked standards in 2002, IFS was a retailer-driven, German food safety and quality standard. IFS expanded into France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and other parts of Europe.
In 2010, the market in North America showed demand for third-party certification, as well as the need for further supply chain certification support in South America and Asia. IFS opened an office in St. Louis, MO to support the needs of the market and growth of the standard in North America.
With more than 12,000 certifications globally in 2011, IFS also opened an office in Hefei, China office to provide auditor and industry training, as well as oversight of the IFS Integrity Program in Asia. Further expansion into South America in 2011 with an office in Dourados, Brazil provides a support system for certification bodies and food processors in the Latin American market.
With its expansion in 2010 and 2011, IFS offers the only truly global network of in-region support for a food safety and quality standard.
